Hathazari madrasa students hold demo, demand removal of Shafi's son
Students of Darul Ulum Muinul Islam Madrasa (Bara Madrasa) staged demonstration on Wednesday to press home their five-point demand.
The demand include removing Maulana Anas Madani, son of Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi, from the madrasa, bringing an end to all kinds of harassment to implement the institutional facilities of students, making Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi adviser relieving him from the post of director as he has become unfit to continue his responsibilities, handing over the responsibilities to Shura for appointing and firing anyone from the madrasa, and re-appointing the former alems and expelling the flatterers from the Shura.
The demonstration of the students continued from early Wednesday afternoon to the evening. The students observed their demonstration closing the main gate of the madrasa.
The demonstrators vandalised the offices of madrasa's assistant director-general Moulana Sheikh Ahmad, teacher Nurul Islam Jihadi and Moulana Anas Madani. They chanted slogans and demanded removal of Moulana Anas Madani, who is also the assistant director (Education) of the madrasa.
Receiving information, law enforcers led by Chattogram police super Rashidul Huque and additional police super (North) Mashiuddowla Reza rushed to the spot and took position outside the madrasa.
It is learnt that the madrasa students started demonstrating after Zohr prayers on Wednesday closing all the gates. They called for removal of Hefajat-e-Islam's central publicity secretary Anas Madani.
Receiving information, Hathazari upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Mohammad Ruhul Amin went to the spot. However, he couldn't enter as all the gates of madrasa were closed. Instantly, he informed the senior officials of the law enforcing agencies. Being informed, the law enforcers led by their respective senior officials rushed to spot and took position there. They also couldn't enter the madrasa as all the gates were closed.
However, plying of motor vehicles on Chattogram-Nazirhat-Khagrachhari highway was not affected due to the demonstration. But, panic spread among the locals when they heard about the demonstration inside the madrasa. The demonstrators called upon all to continue their demonstration programme peacefully remaining inside the madrasa premises.
A tense situation is now prevailing in and outside the madrasa. However, plying of vehicles on the nearby highway remains normal.
Hathazari police station officer-in-charge (OC) Masud Alam said law enforcers are ready to check any untoward incident inside the Hathazari Bara Madrasa over the five-point demand of the agitating students.
