Indictment hearing in Khaleda's Gatco graft case on October 13


A Dhaka court on Wednesday fixed October 13 to hold hearing on charge framing in Gatco graft case against BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and others, reports UNB.

Acting judge of the Dhaka Special Judge Court -3 Nazrul Islam set the date allowing a time plea of the defence. Wednesday was set for holding hearing on charge framing, but prime accused Begum Khaleda Zia was absent on 'health ground.' Because of it, the judge fixed the new date adjourning the hearing. Her lawyer Zia Uddin Zia filed the time plea.
Khaleda Zia got bail in the Gatco case surrendering before a court on April 5, 2016.

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC)'s deputy director Golam Shahriar filed the case against 13 people, including Khaleda and her younger son Arafat Rahman on September 2, 2007, with Tejgaon Police Station for their role in corruption regarding penning a contract with Global Agro Trade (Pvt) Co Ltd (Gatco) for container management at inland container depots in Dhaka and Chattogram.

Formal charge was submitted against 24 persons on May 13, 2008. But of the 24 accused, six including Arafat, Saifur Rahman and Matiur Rahman Nizami have died so far.

Seven of the 24 accused in the Gatco case have already died. They were Khaleda Zia's younger son Arafat Rahman Koko, former minister M Saifur Rahman, former BNP secretary general Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, BNP standing committee member and former minister MK Anwar, former minister M Shamsul Islam, Jamaat leader Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami who was hanged to death for crimes against humanity and Chief Finance and Accounts officer of Chattogram Port Ahmed Abul Kashem. Now, 17 accused of the case are alive.

It was stated in the case that the accused casued a losses amounting to Tk 14.56 crore awarding Gatco container handling work at Kamlapur ICD and Chattogram Port.

Besides, Gatco paid Arafat Rahman Koko and Ismail Hossain Saimon Tk 2,19,99,736 illegally for managing the container handling work for it.
