107 Bangladeshi workers, stranded in Vietnam, return home

A total of 107 jobless Bangladeshi workers returned home by a special flight on Tuesday afternoon though they went there legally on job visas.

They reached Dhaka by a chartered flight og US-Bangla from Vietnam's capital Hanoi at about 2:00pm. Five more Bangladeshis, who were stranded in Vietnam due to coronavirus, also returned with them.
Bangladesh ambassador to Hanoi Samina Naz bid them goodbye at the airport.

Most of the workers who returned home on Tuesday, said different recruting agencies sent them to Vietnam in the last several months. But, they did not receive anything else in Vietnam as per the agreements with them. Rather, they fell in the traps of middlemen. Taking their passports away, the middlemen forced them to work part-time at different places on very meagre amounts. They also torturned the workers in many cases. When those irregularities appraed in the press, the government started taking action.

The stranded people were sent back after recovering their passports, waving penalties applicable for staying beyond their visa period and issuance of exit permits, Bangladesh ambassador to Vietnam Samina Naz said.

The Vietnam government allowed operations of the special flight for transferring the stranded workers as regular flight operations were closed in COVID-19 pandemic situation, according to a press release of the Bangladesh embassy.

Rackets of traffickers took scores of Bangladesh people to Vietnam with an assurance of employing in good jobs although there was no job available for foreigners in the country, according to the foreign ministry.

The government identified a racket after the death of Bangladesh citizen Nazmul Hasan, who was taken to Vietnam in a team of about three dozen workers with promise for good with US$400 salary per month, in May.

Different recruiting agencies have sent some 1,500 Bangladeshi workers to Vietnam since 2014. But the Bangladesh embassy in Vietnam said there is no employment opportunities for foreign workers in Vietnam though the Bangladesh government allowed them to leave the country.
