Cox's Bazar OC withdrawn after drug peddler dies in police custody
Cox's Bazar's Sadar Model Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Syed Abu Md Shajahan Kabir has been withdrawn following the death of a yaba drug peddler in police custody .
Additional Police Super (Admn) Md Iqbal Hosayn confirmed it on Tuesday evening.
The deceased Nabi Hossain, 38, was the son of late Abdus Shukkur of Banglabazar Paschim Multarkul area under the Sadar upazila.
Earlier on Monday afternoon, local people tried to nab Nabi Hossain at Khorulia Bazar area when he tried to sell yaba pills. He, however, fled the place hacking locals indiscriminately with a sharp knife. Several people including a local Tomtom driver Shahabuddin were injured. Afterward, locals chased him and gave a mass beating. At that time, they found a sharp knife, cash Tk 1 lakh 28 thousand and 13 yaba pills searching his body.
Jhilongja union parishad chairman Tipu Sultan said a police team led by sub-inpector Anjan went there after locals informed police and took away the injured drug peddler with them. At that time, he condition was not so bad.
Later, Cox's Bazar Sadar Police Station OC (Investigation) Khairuzzaman said, "Receiving information that a yaba peddler was injured in a mass beating, police went there and brought him to the police station after giving him first-aid. As the man fell sick in the morning, he was admitted to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital where he died while underwent treatment."
He further said there is a case pending against the man under the Liquor and Narcotics Act.
Meanwhile, Cox's Bazar Sadar Police Station OC Syed Abu Md Shajahan Kabir was withdrawn in connection with the death of a drug peddler in police custody, said Additional Police Super (Admn) Md Iqbal Hosayn.
"The OC has been attached to the Chattogram Range of Police," he said.
