Kotwali police OC among 5 cops sued for extortion

A cloth trader has filed a case against city's Kotwali Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Mizanur Rahman, four other cops and an informant on charge of extortion by "threatening to kill him in crossfire".
Trader Sohel filed the case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Sufian Noman on Monday.
The other accused in the case are: Kotwali police SIs Pabitra Sarkar,42, and Khalid Sheikh,45, ASI Shahinur Rahman,42, constable M Mizan,52, and informant Motaleb.
The court, however, ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to appoint an ASP for investigating the allegation and to submit an investigation report by September 16.
According to the case statement, the accused waylaid complainant in Waizghat area under Kotwali Police Station on August 2 and took away Tk 2,900 from Sohel after searching his body.
"As he sough the money back, the accused threatened him to kill in crossfire.They also put 214 Yaba tablets in Sohel's pocket and took him to the police station," said the case statement.
When the complainant's family came to the police station on information, they demanded Tk 7 lakh from them. If the money is not given, they threatened to produce him before court in JMB and drug cases.
Despite giving them Tk 2 lakh, the accused sent him to court as non-FIR accused and threatened him to kill in crossfire if he discloses the incident after release from court hajat, Sohel alleged.
The OC, however, told media, "I've heard about the case. But, could not say when and where I demanded extortion."
