In spite of fixing the prices and announcing the export of rawhide by the government, anarchy in the prices of sacrificial animals' hide could not be prevented on Saturday.
The cattle rawhides were sold at Tk 150 to Tk 600 in terms of their sizes, while the goatskins were sold at Tk 25 to Tk 40.
Madrasha students collected cowhides and goatskin visiting different places from the morning. Wholesalers and tannery owners bought cowhides at many places in the capital but almost at half prices fixed by the Commerce Ministry a week ago.
While visiting the Jhigatola Tannery Crossing and Posta's Wholesale Market in the capital early Saturday afternoon, this correspondent found that rawhides of sacrificial animals were being sold at much low prices than the prices fixed by the Ministry of Commerce about a week earlier though the rawhide prices were fixed at 20 to 29 percent less from the previous year.
On July 26, the government announced the prices of salted cowhide at Tk 35-40 a square foot in Dhaka and Tk 28-32 a square foot for outside Dhaka, which was 20 per cent lower than the last year's prices.
The prices of castrated-goat skin were announced at Tk 13-15 a square foot with a 27 per cent decrease from the previous year's prices. The prices of goatskin were set at Tk 10-12 a square foot, down 22 per cent from the last year.
The announced prices of rawhides are the lowest ever in the history of the country's leather industry.
