A retired army Major has been shot dead by police at Teknaf in Cox's Bazar. The slain army official is Sinha Mohammad Rashed.
The incident happened at about 10:30pm on Friday at Shamlapur police check post along the Marine Drive Road.
Police claimed that the retired army official was coming to Cox's Bazar from Teknaf by his private car along with another person. He obstructed police when they tried to search the car after intercepting it at Baharchhara check post along the Marine Drive.
At one stage of altercation, police fired at Rashed from point blank-range when he brandished his pistol. It left the army official critically injured. The on-duty doctor pronounced him dead after he was taken to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital.
It was learnt that the slain retired Major Rashed had been staying at a rest house in Himchhari over the last one month with four people including a woman to film a documentary.
Cox's Bazar police super ABM Masud Hossain claimed that the inhabitants of Shamlapur informed police suspecting the people on board the private car as dacoits. "Police tried to intercept the car at the check post for searching. But, a passenger of the car tried to kill the police using his pistol. Police also fired at him for 'self-defense, leaving the person dead," he said.
Police said two cases were filed in connection with the incident. Two persons were detained. Police also seized the pistol of the army official.
Cox's Bazar SP ABM Masud Hossain also claimed that police found 50 yaba tablets, some marijuana and two bottles of foreign made liquor searching the private car.
