'50% ICU beds lying vacant'

'50% ICU beds lying vacant'

Although the government has raised the number of beds in the COVID-19 dedicated hospitals for providing proper treatment to the patients, but some 50.27 percent beds in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) in different hospitals across the country are lying vacant.

"some 188 beds, out of 374 beds in the ICU are lying vacant. That means some 50.27 per cent beds are empty," informed Additional Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Prof Dr Nasima Sultana at  the daily health bulletin on Monday.

She informed that there are some 14,664 general beds in different hospitals across the country for COVID-19 patients where only 4,167 patients are admitted and 10,797 lying vacant.
Moreover, there are 6,305 general beds in Dhaka hospitals, but, only 2,051 patients are admitted in general beds, added Dr Nasima.

"Hospitals in Dhaka city have 142 ICU beds, 87 are admitted and 55 lying vacant while hospitals of Chattogram city have 39 beds where 19 are admitted and 20 lying vacant," she said.
