The flood protection embankment at Simla area in Sirajganj district went under the Jamuna River again one month after its repairing, forcing dozens of families near it displaced.
About 70 meters of Spar embankment in the area were damaged early Thursday due to the onrush water of the river.
Earlier, on May 30, WDB dumped sand-loaded Geo bags to protect the collapse of 30-meter of the spar embankment.
Being panicked by the collapse, dozens of families nearby the embankment area are leaving their houses and taking shelter in highland areas, said locals.
WDB district branch WDB deputy divisional engineer AKM Rafiqul Islam said 70-meters of the embankment damaged due to the onrush water from the river. They are working to protect the rest part of the embankment, he added.
Though the water level slightly decreased at Sirajganj point but overall flood situation remain unchanged as 25,000 people in low-lying areas of the district marooned.
WDB deputy engineer Ranajit Kumar Saha said the Jamuna River was flowing 42 cm above the danger level at Sirajganj point in last 24-hour while 61 cm at Kazipur point.
The district Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Abdur Rahim said 31 union parishad’s under five upazilas flooded which caused the partial damage of 280 houses, inundated 16 kilometers roads and totally damaged 22 educational and religious institutions.
The district administration has allocated 125 metric tons of rice for flood-hit people.
