New areas flooded in Sirajganj as Jamuna continues swelling
Water level of the Jamuna River in Sirajganj is flowing 34 cm above the danger lever and continue to swell due to the upstream water from the hilly areas.
Hundreds acres of cultivated lands of char areas inundated and about 30,000 people of 25 union parishads in the distrct marooned.
Besides, water of rivers Karatoa, Boral and Ichamati have also increased.
People of low-lying and char areas of Sadar, Kazipur, Belkuchi, Chouhali and Shahjadpur upazilas are suffering for shelter, pure water and cooked food crisis as there is no sign of declining the flood.
Bangladesh Water Development Board (Sirajganj branch) deputy engineer AKM Rafiqul Islam said the Jamuna River is flowing 63 cm above the denger level at Kazipur and Sirajganj points in last 24 hours. The water level would continue to rise on next three days, he added.
In Sadar upazila, residents are taking shelter on the embankment areas after flood damaged the old embankment of BWDB in Gunergati village and inundated Ranigram village also.
In Kazipur upazila, about 2,000 people marooned and houses in the upazila submerged under fresh water. Communications of Shuvogasa union parishad with Ratankandi union parishad suspended as 1.5 kilometere road went under water.
Shuvogasa UP chairman SM Habibur Rahman said hundreds of people in his UP marooned due to flood.
Kazipur UNO Jahid Hasan Siddique said they have allocated 23 metric ton of rice for the flood affected people and it will be distributed within a day.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Abdur Rahim said the flood situation is not in worse condition. They have asked authorties concerned to allocate 300 metric tons of rice and Tk 5 lakh in cash, he added.
