Kitchen market stable on high side

In the post budget kitchen market prices of almost all essential items are stable but on high side from earlier days. Contrary to it prices of vegetables showed up although it has no relation with budget.
Vendors however blamed bad weather saying it has damaged plants and slowed down supply    to cause a rise in vegetables prices. It appears as prices have gone up, consumers have reduced buying to match with lower affordability reducing trade in the market.
The budget has imposed 5 percent duty on import of onion and it has immediate reflection in the prices although vendors are selling from pre-budget stocks.
Onion sells at Tk 5 to 10 higher per kg per in the market. Local onions were priced at Tk48 to Tk 50 per kg, on Saturday, up from Tk45 a couple of days ago. Similarly, imported onion priced at Tk 40 to 45 per kg up from Tk 30 to 35.
Garlic sold at least Tk 30 higher per kg to Tk 120 although the budget has not imposed any duty on import. It is part of market volatility, market sources said. Prices of edible oil are stable unlike previous budget occasions on already the high side. A 5 liter container sells between Tk 450 and 470 on Saturday. Lose edible oil sells at Tk 80 to 90 per liter.
Sugar sold between Tk 75 and 80 per kg as against last week's price at 68 and 70 although there is no reason for the rise.
IN the vegetables market some items sold at Tk 40 to Tk 70 per kg apparently higher by Tk 20 to 30 embarrassing buyers.  Radish and tomato sold at Tk 40 to 50 per kg, brinjal at Tk 40 to 55 to disbelief of many buyers.
Vegetables like bitter gourd, snake gourd, long bean, pointed gourds and clocasia stem sold at higher price between Tk 40 and 60 per kg although during this time of the year their prices decline.
Manjila Akhter, a house wife told the Daily Observer, "Prices of all vegetables are going up. I can't go buy vegetable due to high price. There is no income. The price of everything is going up."
Rafiqul Islam, a vegetable vendor said, "Vegetables price are down every year at this time. But the supply is low this time due to rain. We have to buy at a higher price, so we have to sell at a higher price."
Green chilli was selling for Tk 60 to Tk 70 per on the day. Broiler price increased by Tk 20 per  kg over the week-end. It sold between  Tk 150 and 160 per kg in kitchen markets in the capital on the day.
Locally bred hens were selling for Tk 450 to Tk 500 a kg. The price of eggs remained high  selling for Tk 32 to Tk 36 per four pieces.  
The standard variety of BR-28 rice sold for Tk 42 to 44 per kg. The fine variety sold for Tk 45 to 48 per kg. The fine variety of Miniket rice was selling for Tk 56 to 60 a kg on the city markets on the day.
The fine variety of Najirshail sold at Tk 58 to 60 per kg; its standard variety sold at Tk 65 per kg.
Fish  prices remained unchanged. Rohita sold at Tk 270 to 350 per kg, Katla at Tk 250 to  320 per kg, Pangas at Tk 120 to 180 and Tilapia at Tk 120 to 180 a kg.
The prices of meat remained stable on the day. The beef sold from Tk 550 to 600, mutton from Tk 750 to 800 per kg.
