At least 17 people were killed by separate incidents of lightning strikes in Mymensingh, Habiganj, Bogura, Tangail, Noakhali, Joypurhat, Kushtia, Natore and Chapainawabganj on Thursday.
In Mymensingh, three people were killed in Fulbaria upazila by lightning strike.
The deceased were identified as Abdul Motaleb, 50, Robin, 13, and Imran, 17, residents of the same upazila.
Motaleb was struck by a lightning strike while he was in his field and sustained severe injuries. He died on his way to the hospital, said the OC.
A lightning strike struck on Robin 3.00pm when he was playing near their home at Achim Patuli village, , leaving him dead on the spot. Imran was struck by a lightning strike while flying kites near his home in Biddyananda village in the afternoon, leaving him dead on the spot.
In Habiganj, three children were killed and one was injured by lightning strikes in Ajmiriganj and Bahubal upazilas.
The deceased were identified as Lilu Mia,14, son of Samar Ali of Noanagar village in Ajmiriganj, Nasar Uddin,13, son of Abdus Salam, of Manika village, and Orkaid Mia,11, son of Daras Mia of Noaioi village, in Bahubal.
Injured Osman Ali,8, is the son of Barik Ali of Noaoi village.
Bahubal UNO Snigdha Talukder said thunderbolt struck the children while fishing in haor of their villages this morning, leaving two dead and one injured.
Ajmiriganj UNO Naima Khandkar informed that Lilu Mia died on the spot being hit by lightning strikes when he was fishing in the haor.
In Bogura, four farmers were killed in separate incidents of lightning strikes.
The deceased were identified as Moklechhar Rahman, 55, of Kahaloo, Nurul Islam, 40, of Shahjahanpur, Lebu Mondol, 35, of Sariakandi and Abdus Salam, 45, of Dhunot upazila.
Kahaloo Police Station OC Zia Latiful Islam said the farmers were all working outside during a thunderstorm in the afternoon.
In Tangail a schoolboy was killed in lightning strike in Sadar upazila.
The deceased was identified as Md Anik, 15, a ninth-grader at Darerbari High School & College. He was the son of Md Ayub Ali.
Baghil UP member Abul Haque confirmed the matter.
In Noakhali, a day labourer was killed while he was working during a thunderstorm in Swarna Dwip under Hatiya upazila.
The deceased was identified as Rafiq Ullah, 38, of Subarnachar upazila.
Hatiya Police Station OC Abul Khair confirmed the matter.
In Joypurhat, a farmer was killed in lightning strike in Sadar upazila.
The deceased was identified as Sukomol Chandra Sarkar, 50, a resident of Parulia Ganakbari area in the upazila.
Family members of the deceased said a thunderbolt struck Sukomol when he was taking bath beside his house in the afternoon, leaving him critically injured.
He was taken Joypurhat Adhunik Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. Joypurhat Police Station OC Shahriar Khan confirmed the matter.
In Kushtia, two people were killed by athunderstorm in Kumarkhali upazila.
The deceased were identified as Farque Mondal, 30, of Sadipur and Shafi Mondal, 45, of Nandalal in the upazila.
Sadipur Union Parishad chairman Tofazzel Hossain confirmed the matter.
In Chapainawabganj, a woman was killed after she was struck by lightning in front of her house in Shibganj upazila.
The deceased was identified as Piara Begun, 33, of Char Paka, confirmed Shibganj police station OC Shamsul Alam Shah.
In Natore, a man was killed in a thunderstorm in Gurudaspur upazila.
The deceased was identified as Makbul Hossain, 33.
A thunderbolt struck was struck on Makbul when he went to visit his father-in-law’s house in Kachugari village in the afternoon, confirmed Gurudaspur Police Station OC Mojaharul Islam.
