General holidays once again if coronavirus infection worsens

The government has declared general holidays again and again since March 26. There were doubts about declaring general holiday once again after the Eid-ul-Fitr because the coronavirus situation is gradually worsening in the country.

Bringing an end to all the doubts, the government has relaxed the restrictions and lifted the general holidays or unofficial lockdown.
But, experts think that the government may consider to declare general holidays or impose strict lockdown once again in the wake of continued rise in coronavirus infected cases, detection and deaths.

It is learnt that the government will consider about declaring general holidays and imposing fresh lockdown again if the coronavirus situation is worsened further. The experts concerned will closely monitor the situation until June 15 next. High level officials of the government have been giving this indication time to time.

Following 66 days of general holidays, most of the government and private offices have started their activities in limited scales. Though the administrative work at the educational institutions have started, classes have remained suspended. The classes and examinations are unlikely to be started soon.

Meanwhile, 37 more people died and 2,695 were infected with coronavirus in the country on Wednesday.

With these, the total death tally rose to 746 while the cases stood at 55,140.

Bangladesh occupies the 7th position in the world in terms of coronavirus infection.

On Monday, Road Transports and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader asserted that the government would be compelled to take "tough decisions" again if the coronavirus situation is worsened and goes against the public interest due to ignoring the health guidelines.

The government's policymakers said the government had refrained from declaring general holidays further and lifted the lockdown taking the sufferings of day-labourers, low-income group of people and the overall economy into consideration. However, the government will have ni alternative if the situation worsens further. General holidays and strict lockdown will be declared again.

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury told journalists that refraining from general holidays and relaxing lockdown are not the final decisions of the government. Fesh decision would be taken observing the situation over the next 15 days. Decision is likely to be taken "for the greater interest of people and the country," he said.
