Rohingya crisis: Still a far cry from a fair solution

Rohingya crisis: Still a far cry from a fair solution

Following the first death of a Rohingya man from Covid-19 in Cox's Bazar's Ukhia upazila , our worry has now shifted in the cramped refugee camps. If necessary preventive measures are not adopted right away, we fear that both the infection and death rate will climb higher fast.

Another worry which seems to have become bigger by the day is about the proper repatriation process of the refugees to Myanmar. There has been little progress in the first 6 months of this year, and also the Corona curse had blocked all doors to it. However, now the wakeup call has come from another South American country Argentina. The country has moved one step closer to open a historic investigation against Myanmar's military and civilian leadership over the genocide against the Rohingya people. The court in Buenos Aires on Friday overturned a previous decision not to pursue a case against State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and senior officers in the Myanmar military.

The court has instead requested now more information from the International Criminal Court (ICC) to ensure that a case in Argentina would not duplicate other justice efforts. And this is not the first time that a foreign country has made a move against the horrifying atrocities carried against a helpless Muslim minority community in Myanmar.   The Gambia and The Republic of Maldives had made notable moves in the past years, now it is Argentina which is about to be included in the list. Surprisingly enough, instead of powerful countries falling under the international community label, it has been tiny countries lifting up the Rohingya issue with courage. We thank them profoundly to come forward while upholding the spirit of justice and humanity.

With the world gradually and cautiously opening up, Bangladesh too needs to resume all proactive diplomatic approaches. We are once more seeking the support of the international community, the community members must wake up from the prolonged slumber and put pressure on Myanmar.

Bangladesh is reeling from the economic fallouts of Coronavirus. And the country's resources have been squeezed to their limits. Newer problems are being added to our existing ones. We expect the world to realise this painful truth and act fast.
