Thousands of Dhaka-bound passengers from 21 southern districts of the country started arriving at Kathalbari Ghat in Madaripur district from early Friday morning.

They are coming by different modes of transports including microbuses, motorcycles, and easybikes paying excessive fair.

As the plying of motor launches and speed boats has remained suspended, ferries have been witnessing mad rush of passengers.

Apart from carrying passengers, ferries are also transporting private cars.

On the other hand, mobile courts, police and Ansar teams have been working at the Kathalbari Ferry Ghat to avert any untoward incident due to heavy rush of passengers.

Kathalbari Ferry Ghat sources said pressure from people who intend to return to their working places has started rising since Tuesday after the Eid celebration ended. As a result, Dhaka-bound passengers started crowding the Kathalbari Ferry Ghat from Friday morning.

Meanwhile, movement of ferries has been facing disruption due to rise in water level in the river Padma. Besides, it has become very difficult to enforce social distancing due to mad rush of passengers on the waterways.

Twelve, out of 17 ferries, now ply on the Kathalbari route.

Madaripur's additional police super Md Moniruzzaman Fakir said people from 21 southern districts of the country started arriving at Kathalbari Ghat from early Friday morning by different modes of transports including microbuses, motorcycles, and easybikes paying excessive fair. Later, they are crossing the river Padma by ferries.

He said the local administration and law enforcers have been active to avert any indscipline at the ferrey ghat area. "We're asking passengers to get on board the ferries maintainig recommended physical distance," he said.
