Country reports highest 2,523 virus cases, 23 deaths in a day

Bangladesh on Friday reported the highest number of 2,523 fresh coronavirus cases in last 24 hours, taking the total number to 42,844 in the country.
The deadly virus also claims 23 lives during the period, taking the death tally to 582.
Prof Dr Nasima Sultana, Additional Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), confirmed the matter in the daily online bulletin on the COVID-19 situation in the afternoon.
The country saw more than 2,000 cases in 24 hours for the second consecutive day.
She said a total of 12,982 samples were collected for coronavirus test while some 11,301 samples were tested in the last 24 hours.
Till now, as many as 2,87,067 samples were tested in the country.
Another 590 patients have recovered from the virus in the same period, taking the recovery count to 9,015.
The country confirmed the first coronavirus case on March 8 while the first death on March 18.
The number of global coronavirus deaths reached 359,791 on Friday morning while the confirmed cases were 5,803,416, according to the Centre for System Science and Engineering of Johns Hopkins University.
Coronavirus cases were first reported in China in December last year. The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the coronavirus crisis a pandemic on March 11.
