United Hospital gets notice for death of patient 'due to negligence'

Legal notice has been served on United Hospital at Gulshan in Dhaka for the death of a patient due to negligence.

Following the death of Mahmuda Khanam, 75, her son Dr Ziauddin Haider sent the legal notice through Supreme Court lawyer Golam Mostofa Shahin by an email on Thursday.

The lawyer said United Hospital's managing director Faridur Rahman Khan and chief executive officer Md Faizur Rahman were requested to take steps seeking an explanation of showing negligence in the treatment of patient and making indecent behaviour with her relatives.

The legal notice has also mentioned that if an explanation is not received within 15 days, legal action will be taken according to laws.

Dr Ziauddin Haider, an expatriate living in Cambodia, is working as a specialist physician in the World Bank Group.

In his notice, Dr Ziauddin Haider said pneumonia was detected in her mother's body on April 5 last and oxygen started to fall in her blood. Later, she was taken to a clinic at Uttara and arrangement was made to give her oxygen. As her blood samples tested coronavirus negative, she was admitted to the ICU of United Hospital at midnight on April 12.

Patients are usually given oxygen through ventilators if the rate of oxygen in their blood falls below 50 per cent. But the United Hospital authorities released her from the hospital hurriedly on April 14 though she was under life support. Later, she was admitted to Bangladesh-Kuwait Moitree Hospital and died on April 23 while she was undergoing treatment there.

Dr Ziauddin said the United Hospital authorities called in his brothers on April 14 and told them that the "patient Mahmuda Khanam would have to be shifted as she was found coronavirus positive in her second test."

"Despite repeated requests of the relatives of patient, the United Hospital authorities forced my brothers to shift Mahmuda Khanam to Kuwait Bangladesh Moitree Hospital," he said.

In his notice, Dr Ziauddin further alleged that his mother died due to immoral and unlawful decision of the United Hospital authorities. "It was totally unacceptable to refer a patient on life support to another hospital without adequate arrangements. It was a murder," he said.
