Amtali OC withdrawn after death in police custody

Barguna's Amtali Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Abul Bashar has been withdrawn following the mysterious death of alleged suspected murder accused Shanu Howlader in police station custody.

OC Abul Bashar was withdrawn on Friday afternoon in a letter signed by Barguna police super Md Maruf Hossain at the directive of Barisal DIG Md Shafiqul Islam. He was attached to the Barguna Police Lines.

Local people expressed deep satisfaction following the withdrawal of OC. They demanded trial of him.

It is learnt that miscreants killed one Ibrahim at village Paschim Kolagachia under Gulishathali union in Amtali upazila on November 3 last year. Shanu Howlader's step-brother Mizanur Rahman Howlader is an accused of the case. Amtali police picked Shanu Howlader as a suspected accused from his home at about 11:30 on Monday night. Later, Amtali Police Station OC Abul Bashar and OC (Investigation) Monoranjan Mistry allegedly demanded Tk 3 lakh from his family. But, the family declined to pay money. There were allegations that being failed to realise the money, police had brutally and mercilessly tortured Shanu Howlader in their custody in the name of questioning him. Witnessing the brutal torture on his father, Shanu's son Sakib Hossain gave a bribe of Tk 10,000 to the OC Abul Bashar. But, the amount could not satisfy him and raised the intensity of torture.

The family members went to Amtali Police Station on Wednesday to meet Shanu Howlader. But police didn't allow them to meet him and misbehaved with them, alleged Sakib Hossain.

At about 6:15am on Thursday, police took Shanu Howlader to a toilet at his request. After sometime, OC Abul Bashar started shouting claiming that accused Shanu Howlader had committed suicide inside the room of OC (Investigation) Monoranjan Mistry with a ceiling fan.

Later, a three-member committee was formed to investigate the incident with district SP Maruf Hossain, additional police super Md Tofael Ahmed.

Instantly, Barguna SP Maruf Hossain suspended OC (Investigation) Monoranjan Mistry and duty officer ASI Arif Hossain for their negligence in duty.

On the other hand, Amtali Police Station OC Abul Bashar was withdrawn in a letter by Barguna SP Maruf Hossain and at the directive of Barisal DIG Md Shafiqul Islam following the order of Police Headquarters in Dhaka. OC Abul Bashar was attached to Barguna Police Lines.
