The fisheries department has detained eight fishermen in Daulatkhan upazila of Bhola district for fishing in Meghna River defying government ban.
A team, led by the upazila senior fisheries officer Md Mahfuzul Hasnain, conducted drives in the river from Tuesday afternoon till evening and nabbed them.
They also seized 30,000 meters of fishing net, two trawlers and 20 kilograms of hilsha during the drive.
Later, a mobile court, led by UNO Jeetendra Kumer Nath, fined three fishermen--Faruque, 50, Awlad Hossain, 22 and Roman, 20-- Tk 5,000 each while released five others as they are under 18.
However, the seized hilsha were distributed in different orphanages in the upazila while the nets were burnt down, our local correspondent said.
