India has resumed onion export to Bangladesh through the Dinajpur’s Hilly land port after ending of a six months ban on this product. Prices of onions declined after the import, and it is selling Tk 22-23 per kg.
A total of 428 metric tons of onions, on 19 trucks, were imported through the land port at about 3.45 pm on Sunday.
Wholesalers are gathering at the port from different parts of the country after hearing the news of India’s onion import.
On September 28 in 2019, Indian authorities imposed a ban on onion export citing the reason for the crisis of its’ insufficient stock inside the country. Prices of onion turned as skyrocketing in Bangladesh after this ban.
Onion importers of the port appealed to the government to import 25,000 tons of onions from India and got approval to import 8,000 tons of onions.
Harun-Ur-Rashid, president of Export-Import Group of Hili land port, said prices of onions are declining after the import.
“Now onions are selling Tk 22-23 per kg and will be decreased further within this week,” he added.
Retailer Anwar Hossain said monitoring is needed to check the onion price. “If the importers sell it high price then we also bound to sell it with the same price.”
