UK closes Universal Credit gap

Tory benefits chiefs have closed a Universal Credit gap after campaigners warn it could leave pensioners up to nine weeks without cash.

From now on, people with six-in-one benefit will be given a guaranteed one-off-payment - on average £350 a head - when they hit the state pension age and leave UC.

The £70 million policy is expected to provide cash guarantees to 200,000 Universal Credit claimants who reduce the state pension age over the next five years.

It is a victory for a campaign backed by 74 MPs from Labour , Lib Dem, SNP , Plaid Cymru, the Greens and DUP after a gap in the law was spotted by a local Citizens Advice office in Flintshire.

Citizens Advice workers say pensioners have long been at risk of being left out of money because of the way Universal Credit and New State Pensions are being paid to everyone.

While some claimants did not file a claim for pension credit, they saw the end of their UC payment weeks before the state pension age hit.

Yet they had to wait up to five weeks to pay their pensions, according to researchers for Allin and DZ MP Mark Tommy who raised the issue.-Internet
