Google announced the latest “feature drop” for the Pixel line of its Android phones.

It is part of an effort to get people to realize that the Pixel gets software updates ahead of other Android phones and that some of the features it receives stay exclusive to the Pixel.

First and foremost, that these features were “published” yesterday is only vaguely accurate. Instead, the rollout began yesterday and should theoretically end in a few weeks for all users.

This is significantly better than the last (and first) feature drop, which was driven more slowly to pixel owners.

Google has a very good reason for not distributing updates to everyone one day, but it reduces the excitement people may feel when they hear about them - because there is an indefinite wait I covered all this in the newsletter last December with the first feature drop.

So let’s see what’s new in this month’s update, courtesy of Chris Welch’s rundown.

There are some basic quality life videos (borrowing a sound from video games) Tweets: Dark mode can be set, adaptive brightness can be improved, and you can set up a little action based on the Wi-Fi networks you are connected to. Pixel 4 has a new gesture for motion sense chips, new emoji and new AR effects for Duo video chats. All right.

However, there was a line on Google’s support page for the update that caught my eye (emphasis mine): “In addition to the long press, you can now firmly press for more help from your app faster.”

But now, it seems that Google has done the same thing for the touchscreen as it does with the camera: use its software algorithm to make parts of the product something special. This is a very Google thing to do, but not quite as Googley that this feature has not been found anywhere on the Internet beyond a speculative note from XDA developers.-Internet
