A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Hakimpur upazila of Dinajpur early Friday.

Two policemen – SI Mahe Alam and constable Fazlul Haq – were also critically injured during the encounter, police claimed.

Deceased Kahidul Islam was a resident of Dhawa Nashipur village in the upazila.

Hakimpur Police Station officer in-charge Abdur Razzaq Akanda said on information that a gang of robbers were preparing to commit robbery at Kashiadanga village at early hours, a team of police conducted a drive there.

Sensing the presence of police personnel, the gang opened fire on the team forcing them to fire back on self-defence that triggered a gunfight.

Police, later, recovered the bullet-hit body of Kahidul from the spot.

A pipe gun and a bullet were also recovered from the area.
