CHAR FASSON, BHOLA, Jan 21: Many fishermen in Char Fasson Upazila of the district are now using solar panel in their fishing boats.
The fishermen who can afford the panel are using the system. Instead of kerosene-fuelled hurricane, they are using the panel.
Dhal Char Union is 150 kilometre away from Bhola Town.
Shah Alam Farazi is the first solar energy user in Mohammadpur Village of the union. For the last 10 years, he has been using a 65-watt solar panel. The panel is running five bulbs, one small fan and a colour TV. He bought the panel at Tk 35,000 10 years back. The panel has not yet made any trouble, and the battery required no change.
He, however said, it gives less power in rainy and winter seasons.
Another fisher Amzad Majhi of the same union installed a 20-watt panel in his fishing boat. He uses the panel to charge five mobile phones and to light three bulbs.
He paid Tk 1,950 as one time deposit, and is paying Tk 500 as monthly instalment. He said it would cost only Tk 12,500.
He said, "I have to spend whole night in the river. Earlier, I had to count over Tk 1,000 for charging the mobile phones with diesel-run generator and light hurricane. But, now it is not necessary."
Like Amzad Majhi, more than 200 fishermen of Dhal Char have been enjoying solar facility.
Dhal Char Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Salam Patwary said, "Our union is fully solar-run. Solar panels are running mobile phone tower, union information centres and public and private office."
Mujib Nagar UP Chairman Abdul Wadud Mia said, UP office computers are running with solar power, and people are getting digital services.
At least 30 organisations are engaged in solar panel trade in Char Fasson. There are about one lakh solar system subscribers in the upazila.
Official of Coast Trust Nurul Islam said if a battery is fully charged, it supplies power for about 15 hours.
