The High Court on Tuesday dismissed the writ petition seeking deferment of the date of two Dhaka city elections.
An HC bench of Justice JBM Hasan and Justice Khayrul Alam passed the order.
Adv Ashok Kumar Ghosh stood for the petition while deputy attorney general Nur-us-Sadiq represented the state in the court. Lawyer Tauhidul Islam was present on behalf of the Election Commission.
On January 6, Supreme Court lawyer Ashok Kumar Ghosh filed the writ petition with the High Court seeking its directives on the Election Commission to defer the date of elections to two Dhaka city corporations as Saraswati Puja, one of the religious festivals of the Hindu community, falls on January 29 and 30.
In the writ he said, all the educational institutions across the country will be busy for holding programmes ahead of the puja at that time.
