Ex-OC Moazzem jailed for 8yrs

A Dhaka Court on Thursday sentenced Sonagazi Police Station's former OC Moazzem Hossain to eight years of imprisonment in a case filed under the Digital Security Act for releasing a video recording of a statement by Feni madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi on social media.

Cyber Tribunal Judge Md As-Shams Jaglul Hossain delivered the verdict, first of its kind under this act in the country.
The court also fined him Tk 10 lakh observing that the fine money will be handed over to Nusrat's family. In default, he will have to suffer six months more in jail.

Earlier this morning, OC Moazzem was taken to the court from Kashimpur jail amid tight security.

On November 14, Moazzem had pleaded not guilty and sought justice.

OC Moazzem was accused of unlawfully interrogating Feni madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi and recorded it on phone. A video of the incident went viral on the social media, prompting Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon to file a case against the  policeman on April 15 under the Digital Security Act.

On May 27, investigation officer Rima Sultan submitted a 123-page report before the tribunal.

Then, the tribunal issued arrest warrant against Moazzem following the plaintiff's plea.

On June 16, Shahbagh Police Station arrested Moazzem from Shahbag area.

Bangladesh Cyber Tribunal sent OC Moazzem to jail on June 17 after rejecting his bail petition in the case filed for recording and spreading the video statement of slain Feni madrasa student Nusrat.

Nusrat Jahan Rafi, 18, an Aleem examinee from Sonagazi Fazil Madrasa, was set on fire by some fellows in the morning of April 6 as she refused to withdraw a case filed against the madrasa principal, Sirajuddoula, for sexual harassment.

On October 24, the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Feni sentenced all the 16 accused to death for killing Nusrat.
