Pension law has to be enacted to support senior citizens of the country, however, the amount should be to high, but optimum, so that they continue to contribute the national economy as per their skill and ability.
Planning Minister MA Mannan said this while attending a seminar titled 'Introducing Universal Pension Scheme in Bangladesh: In Search of a Framework' jointly organized by Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) and Oxfam at a city hotel on Wednesday.
The Minister said the government has already taken initiatives for supporting senior citizens. He said: "We can't set the amount of pension so high that everyone stays home without working and their contribution to the economy decline."
The Minister said the government is working in full capacity to ensure social security for the people, and he added introducing long-term allowances for them will help reduce social discrimination.
The CPD in their findings said forty per cent of the public who are aged 65 or above 65 years old in Bangladesh do not get pension.  It said 15 or 20 per cent of the average wage, which is Tk13,000 can be provided as retirement allowance or pension to the elder citizen.
The think tank said pension law has to be enacted and retirement allowance for people aged over 65 should be ensured at flat rate, adding that examples can be taken from India or the Maldives.
With the size of the country's economy, the social security of the elderly citizens needs to be assured further, CPD said.
Professor Mustafizur Rahman, distinguished fellow of the CPD presented keynote speech while Dr Zahid Hussain, former lead economist, The World Bank offered comments as special commentator.
