TEKNAF, COX'S BAZAR, Nov 5: Revenue income from the Teknaf Land Port, which has also river port activities, increased this year.
Revenue worth Tk 10,28,44,000 was realised from the port in Teknaf Upazila of the district in October this year. The port received revenue worth Tk 8.25 crore in October month of the last year.
However, the authorities concerned said that as onion import increased recently, the imports of other commodities have decreased.  As a result, revenue was not earned as expected.
According to the Teknaf Land Port Customs Department, the revenue has been collected through 502 bills of entry in October last.
The total amount of imported goods from Myanmar was worth Tk 127,93,26,000 this month. Out of these, 20,843 metric tonnes of onion were imported.
On the other hand, the goods worth Tk 2,12,34,000 have been exported to Myanmar through 65 bills of export.
Besides, revenue worth Tk 35,29,400 has been collected at Shahparidwip Corridor by importing 3,901 cows, 3,153 buffaloes and 12 goats from Myanmar.
Traders at the Teknaf Land Port complained that a fair environment was not prevalent in the border trade.  Traders have to face various problems. There is still a huge lack of adequate labourers and infrastructures in the port. They have identified ongoing problems between the two countries in order to stimulate border trade and demanded that they be resolved quickly.
Port Customs Officer Mohammad Absar Uddin said onion imports rose in October, resulting in a decline in other commodities. Monthly revenue was reduced slightly. Traders are importing onions for the benefit of the country.
However, importing onion is currently being encouraged, he added.
