Fishermen ready to catch hilsa as ban goes

KHULNA, Oct 30: Hilsa hunters took all preparations with their rafts and nets for catching fish in the Bay of Bengal and the rivers adjacent to the Sundarbans as the 22-day ban on fishing ended at 12am on Thursday.
Officials of the Fisheries Department said thousands of fishermen of coastal districts are taking preparation to go to the Bay of Bengal to catch hilsa after the long pause.
The government imposed a ban on catching, selling, hoarding and transportation of hilsa for 22 days from October 9, 2019 to boost hilsa production through protecting mother hilsa during its peak breeding season.
Officials of the Fisheries Department, Bangladesh Navy, Coast Guard, district and upazila administrations, police and Rapid Action Battalion conducted drives to prevent hilsa fishing during the period. Executive magistrates conducted mobile courts and punished a number of fishermen who violated the ban.
The fishermen are bringing their trawlers to rivers from the dockyard. They are also preparing their daily essentials to load those in the trawlers as they have to pass days in the deep sea during the fishing season, they said.
Families of more than 50,000 registered fishermen in south-western districts are busy to prepare their boats, nets and other materials to start their voyage to catch fish.
"We could not go to the river for fishing for the last 22 days due to the government restriction. We have maintained our livelihood with the food support of the government," Alam Hawlader, a fisherman of Chila area in Mongla Upazila of Bagerhat said.
Meanwhile, local fishermen in a human chain on Wednesday morning alleged that the Indian fishermen had entered Bangladesh territories illegally to catch hilsa during the ban period. At least 63 Indian fishermen were arrested from the Bay of Bengal.
They strongly condemned this and sought government step to stop the Indian fishermen from entering Bangladesh territory.
They also demanded to bring fishermen under government allowances to prevent fishery resources and set up a mobile hospital at Dublarchar of Sundarban to ensure health safety of fishermen who are netting fish in the bay and adjacent areas.
The demand came up from a human chain held at the Chila Bazaar in Mongla Upazila with Md Nurul Islam Sheikh, Pashur River waterkeeper and leader of Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon (BAPA).
Pashur River Waterkeeper, BAPA and Waterkeepers Bangladesh and Mongla Fishermen Association, jointly organised the human chain before catching hilsa as well as other fishes.
General Secretary of Mongla Fishermen Association Abdur Rashid Hawlader, fishermen leaders- Pilat Mondal, Geeta Halder, Nazmul Haque and Maruf Billah addressed, among others.
