Film Genre: The Trailblazing Path

Film Genre: The Trailblazing Path

"Genre" is a term which is closely related to films. Genre, category and duration are used as adjectives to introduce films. In the long history of world cinema, there are lots of varieties and experimentations' based on genre and category whereas Bangladeshi films have not been experimented much. Stories are very common and the way of narration is quite typical. Most of the filmmakers of Bangladesh are frightened to take commercial risk for experimenting on their films.  But there are a few filmmakers who think in a different way, and try out diverse concepts and have cinema treatments that are really poles apart from others. I would like to introduce some feature films which are the first made in Bangladesh according to the respective genres:
Children's Film
In independent Bangladesh, "Emiler Goenda Bahini", was the first children's film released in 1980. In that sense, Badal Rahman is the pioneer in kids' film genre in Bangladesh.  The story of the film was a translated copy of a German writer Erich Kstner.  In the story, on the way to Dhaka from Khulna, young Emil lost his money. After that, the movie's pace gets faster and shows a thrilling adventure of a group of young detectives. Following the path of this film, Chhutir Ghonta, Puroshkar, Dipu Number Two, Bicchu Bahini, Kabuliwala, Amar Bondhu Rashed, Boishommo and many other films were made.
Sports Film
In recent years a sports film was introduced in Bangladeshi cinema history. The name of the film is "Jaago- Dare to Dream" which was directed by Khijir Hayat Khan. The theme of sports and the lives of athletes were given priority in the film alongside portrayal of family relations, love, emotions and poverty. This film showed the football battle between Tripura XI and Comilla XI. The director tried to show the reflection of enthusiasm, devotion and pensive minds of the youngsters of Comilla.  This film was dedicated to "Shadhin Bangla Football Team" of 1971.
Indigenous Film
Aung Rakhine is a Bangladeshi director who made "My Bicycle" in 2015. This film is very different from others only because of its language. It is the first Bangladeshi feature film made in Chakma (indigenous) language. The gist of the story is how a mechanical object sometimes snatches away emotions and behave like a living object. A cycle became the first love of his owner. The story revolved around this cycle. However, Bangladesh Film Censor Board did not permit the film to be released only because of the film's language, which was neither in Bengali, nor in English. Nonetheless, My Bicycle received accolades in both national and international film festivals.
Science Fiction Film
This genre is also a recent edition of Bangladeshi Film industry. In Hollywood, Sci-fi is a popular genre, whereas only two successful sci-fi movies were made in Bangladesh recently.  Amit Ashraf's film "Apartment 5D" released in 2015. This 50 minute film tells a story of the protagonist "Akash" and his virtual reality.  In 2012, Swapan Ahmed also scripted a sci-fi story named "Porobashinee".
Psychoanalytical Thriller Film
Renowned movie director, Shahidul Islam Khokon, made Bangladesh's first psychoanalytical thriller fiction "Bishwapremik" (1995). The plot consists of the character of a serial killer who kills women who have a mole in their neck. He then collects the moles and makes garlands with them. Peculiar hobby, indeed! After a long time break, a well-known Tele-fiction maker, Animesh Aich, made "Zero Degree" in 2015 which went on to become the most successful psychoanalytical thriller ever made in Bangladesh.
Animation Film
Based on Rabindranath Tagore's short story, Tapan Ahmed is trying to make an animated fiction, named "Detective", for the first time in Bangladesh. The trailer of the film was published on YouTube last year. But the film has not been released yet. Amit Ashraf and animator Zubuyer Kaolin also tried to make an animation movie in 2014 named "The Dreamstage". Dreams and fantasies were the two main elements of that story.
First Film Noir
One of the most famous directors of Bangladesh, Amitabh Reza Chowdhury, made his debut film named "Aynabaji" that was released in 2016. After the release, the film got huge acclamation across the country from the very first day. But there's a question to be aroused- is it a dark comedy or a political satire? People praised the film for the director's creativity and the treatment of the film. Sense of humor beautified the overall storytelling and made it more enjoyable for the audience. "Criminals are not found inside in jail, they are roaming outside"- This was the main theme of Aynabaji, the first film noir in Bangladesh.
Free-length film
Ashraf Shishir, an independent filmmaker, is going to make a new world record with his fiction cinema, "Amra Ekta Cinema Banabo (The Innocence)", that is almost 21 hours in total length. It might possibly break the previous record of the longest cinematic films in history. The director said that he didn't want to bind art in any limitations or instructions. "The Innocence" is divided into 8 chapters in total. The first two chapters have already been permitted for screening by the film censor board of Bangladesh, which will be released soon in the cinema halls.
