The government is planning to buy as many as 83 double-deckers ahead of the Eid festival, said officials of the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation said. Talking to the Daily Observer they said at present about 588 old buses are operating in the city posing serious environmental hazard.  The buses available in the city are not adequate to meet the demand of the city people. This is why the government had planned to buy 83 buses from India, said BRTC officials.
"The new buses will hit the streets across the country to ease people's Eid journey. It will also add extra comfort to the life of city dwellers," said BRTC Chairman Farid Ahmed Bhuiyan.
Each bus will carry passengers five times more than five mini buses can do. A double-decker will have a total of 120 seats. BRTC Chairman Farid Ahmed Bhuiyan noted that the government had taken a decision to purchase 300 double-deckers from Indian Company Ashok Leland each costing TK 72 lakh, 100 single-decker AC intercity bus each costing Tk 70 lakh and 100 single-decker non-AC buses from the TATA Company.
Under this project about 100 AC single-deckers, 100 non-AC single-deckers, 100 single-deckers intercity buses 217 double-deckers have already been purchased. The rest 83 double-deckers will be purchased within the first week of August, he said.
Passengers can use the transports to travel to different destinations before the Eid Festival. BRTC Deputy General Manager M Moniruzzaman said passengers especially women and children face a huge transportation crisis while going home for Eid during the holiday rush.
"Many travel at the risk of their lives," he said. "Keeping that in mind, this year, BRTC has decided to allocate 83 double-deckers for passengers." Besides, an additional 50 buses have been set aside for general Eid travelers in different depots, according to a BRTC statement.
