7 Ctg mega projects get Tk 5,155cr

CHATTOGRAM, Jun 17: An amount of Tk 5,155 crore has been allocated for seven mega projects of Chattogram in the proposed budget for 2019-2020 fiscal.
The amount has been allocated for seven projects under Railway, Bridges Division, CDA, Chattogram WASA, and Chattogram City Corporation.
The seven mega projects are, Karnaphuli Tunnel under Bridges Division, construction of railway track from Chattogram to Ghumdhum via Cox's Bazar and Ramu project under Railway, Chattogram City Outer Ring Road under CDA, Elevated Expressway under CDA, water-logging removal project under CDA, Karnaphuli Water supply project under Chattogram WASA, and Construction of Bus and Truck terminal under Chattogram City Corporation.
An amount of Tk 1349.99 crore for Karnaphuli Tunnel under Karnaphuli River, Taka 1105 crore for construction of railway track from Chattogram to Ghumdhum via Cox's Bazar and Ramu project under Railway, Taka 738 crore for Chattogram City Outer Ring Road under CDA, Tk 650.93 crore for construction of Elevated Expressway under CDA from Lalkhan Bazar to Shah Amanat Airport, Tk 500 crore for water-logging removal project under CDA, Tk 440.37 crore for Karnaphuli Water supply project (2nd phase) under Chattogram WASA, and taka 371 crore for Construction of Bus and Truck terminal under Chattogram City Corporation.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the first ever Tunnel under the river Karnaphuli after the name of the Father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on February 24 this year.
The tunnel is being built at a cost of Tk 9,880 crore to turn Chattogram into 'One City Two Towns'.
The total length of the proposed tunnel will be around 9.092 kilometres, including 3.50 kilometres of tunnel under the Karnaphuli River with an approach road of 4.89 kilometres alongside 740 metres of bridges linking the main port city and western side of the Karnaphuli along with the heavy industry-prone eastern side of the river.  It will cut the road distance between Chattogram and Cox's Bazar, apart from easing the traffic on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway entering the port city to go to other parts of Chattogram division.  The multilane tunnel will connect Chattogram Port and Anowara Upazila and is expected to make communication between Chattogram and Cox's Bazar easier in addition to  reducing traffic congestions on two bridges over the Karnaphuli River.
Chinese firm China Communication Construction Company Ltd (CCCC) has been appointed as a consultant for the construction of the tunnel.  
The total cost for the tunnel has been estimated as $1.06 billion, or about Tk 84.46 billion. The Exim Bank in China will provide Tk 47.99 billion and the government will fund the remaining Tk 36.47 billion.  
Besdies, the first ever 18 km long elevated Expressway in Chattogram has been inaugurated by the Prime Minister on February 24 this year.  
The Chattogram Development Authority has launched construction on the elevated expressway project, which is estimated to cost Tk 32.50 billion. Max-Rankin JV is constructing the expressway.  
The other mega project titled ''Canal re-excavation, renovation and expansion to eradicate water logging of Chattogram" worth Tk 5,616 crore on August 9, 2017 to end the longstanding waterlogging problem in the city has been taken by the government.
Under the project, the implementing agency will re-excavate 36 canals of Chattogram city, construct drains nearby to remove rainwater, acquire 96 acres of land, and construct 176,000 metres of retain wall, 85.68 km of road, 48 PC bridges and 6 culverts.
