Poverty in Bangladesh has reduced further in 2018 compared to the previous years, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) released on Monday.
According to BBS data, the poverty rate stands at 21.8 percent and the extreme poverty rate at 11.3 percent in 2018, which was 23.1 percent and 12.1 percent respectively in 2017.
The BBS data was published on the final report of the House hold income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) project.
BBS Director General Dr. Krishna Gayen, Project Director Dipankar Roy, Director Ziauddin Ahmed and Joint Director AKM Ashraful Haque were also present at the publication of the report.
The report said that in 2005, where the poverty rate was 40 percent, it decreased to 24.3 percent in 2016. In 2005, the rate of extreme poverty was 25.1 percent, and in 2012 it stood at 12.9 percent.
Dr. Krishna Gayen said that in 2005, 10,080 families were surveyed and in 2010, 12,240 families were surveyed. In 2016, the number of samples was increased to 46080. The primary results of this project were published in the month of October, 2016 in World Poverty Alleviation Day.
Agriculture grew 4.19 percent in 2017-18, way up from 3.06 percent in the provisional estimate, according to the BBS.
Industry grew 12.06 percent against the preliminary estimate of 11.99 percent and the services sector rose 6.39 percent, up from the previous figure of 6.33 percent.
He said the poverty rate fell as economic growth accelerated. The government will bring down the extreme poverty rate to zero before 2030 riding on the faster economic growth, he said.
The HIES is one of the core activities of the BBS. It contains a wide range of socio-economic information at the household level that has strong influence in the decision making process of the government.
According to the survey, the monthly income of the each house hold stood Tk 15,988, against Tk 11 479 in 2010. Per capita income stood at Tk 3,940 in 2016, which was Tk 2,553 in 2010. Lastly, the family-based expenditure was at Tk 15,715, against Tk 11,200 in 2010.
Experts noted with concern that a slower growth in agriculture was largely contributing to this slowdown and immediate policy interventions were needed to give the poverty reduction efforts momentum.
They also spoke of a drop in remittance, lack of job opportunities, wealth inequality and challenges of reaching the hard-to-reach poor people.
The BBS generally releases HIES every five years but this time it is a year late.
