As a nation, Bangladeshis are proud of their national heritage, literature and poetry. Today we have Bangladeshis all around the world and are coalescing into a global community where ideas and feeling can be expressed in many different languages but with the same spirit of a Bangladeshi.
There is a scarcity of poems written from a Bangladeshi perspective in a foreign language. It is a delight to see that a young poet like Nur Sarah Kader raising in the United States of America still holds all the cultural norms and feeling of a Bangaldeshi. Her upbringings and closeness to her family have kept her close to her Bangladeshi culture.
Her ethnicity, religion, and culture are an integral part of who she is. She also relates the challenges of integration in a different culture from the point of view of her grandmother who has struggles with language and norm in a different culture.
Her expression of very common things in Bangladeshi culture are so vivid in her poems that it would make the reader wonder that our culture and beliefs are universal and could assimilate seamlessly in any and all culture.
The poems take from simple view to complex themes with political unrest and negative views of migration and crisis in western hemisphere as well as in Rohingya crisis in Bangladesh. As a young poet Nur is fully aware of it and relates that to many Bangladeshis and their plights during the independence within the subcontinent. The poems are so vivid that it takes the reader along a journey in the various stages of growth from early childhood to adolescence. Nur started writing from ages 8 and now at 16. Her book was so inspiring that it hits of chords with many Bangladeshi readers. I commend Behulabangla for publishing the book and allowing readers to the exposure.
The books had received many social media reviews and over 35000 active engagement in Facebook. The sales of the book was the highest in its genre and was awarded the #1 best selling book in Ekushey Book Fair this year.
The book is available locally online in Rokamari (rokomari.com) and in the US in Amazon (amazon.com). I would invite readers to review the book and it is a great read for any ages and in particular for students who want to aspire to traveling far away places as part of a global community.
