Over 7,221 people lost their lives and 15,466 others received injuries in 5,514 road accidents across the country in 2018, said Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (BJKS).
Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, general secretary of the passenger welfare body, disclosed the report containing the casualty figure of road accidents at a press conference at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Friday.
Former adviser to a caretaker government Hossain Zillur Rahman, who was also present in the briefing, said incidents of death in roads are continuing because of failure to ensure accountability in transport sector.
Speakers at the programme said the government has passed the road transport act quickly but is not taking initiatives to implement it.
A vested quarter comprising of people in the assigned associations for transport sector, police, transport owners, and workers has been created. The circle does not want discipline in the sector, they added.
BTRA's former chairman Aiyubur Rahman, journalist Ishtiaq Reza and PSC former chairman Ikram Ahmed, among others, were present at the press conference.
