RMG workers protest at fellows dismissal
Readymade garment workers staged demonstrations in Shreepur upazila of Gazipur blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway on Thursday protesting termination of some of their fellows.
Employees of CA Knitwear factory of NZ Group put up barricade in Bhabanipur area on the highway from 8:00am to 12:00 noon and staged demonstration suspending vehicular movement for four hours.
Zannat Ara, a cutting operator of the factory, said she was asked by the factory authorities to sign in a blank paper 4/5 days ago but she denied that led to her termination, she alleged.
Zannat is not the lone case of termination, rather the authorities often terminate workers in different reasons, including of late attendance in the factory, alleged the workers.
According to some employees, security guards did not allow around 400 workers to join the duty this morning. Later, the workers equipped with sticks took to the street and blocked the highway.
Sahed Ali Pathan, additional superintendent of Gazipur Industrial Police, said they asked the agitating workers to leave the highway for vehicular movement but they denied. Later, they remove barricade following assurance by the authorities of reinstating the job of the sacked workers, he added.
Police, however, detained three officials-- Zakir Hossain, Zahangir Alam and Shakibul Alam-- of the factory's human resource division in the incident of job dismissal.
