RMG workers staged demonstration, vandalized and torched vehicles in Dhaka Export Processing Zone (DEPZ) area of Savar in Dhaka on Sunday night over their fellow's death in a road accident.
A bus carrying workers ran over Lison, 25, a worker of Shanta Industries Limited in DEPZ, and her wife Nishitha Begum in front of the main gate of EPZ's new zone around 6:30pm, leaving Lison dead on the spot and Nishitha injured.
Soon after the incident, fellows of late Lison became angered and took to the street. Adjacent factories' workers also joined them.
They vandalized around 20 vehicles and torched about 14 ones, said Ashulia Police Station officer in-charge Rezaul Haque Dipu.
Several police members were beat up by angry workers while trying to remove them from the street, OC Dipu added.
Abdul Hamid, an official of DEPZ Fire Services and Civil Defense, said the workers obstructed the fire engines and tried to vandalize their vehicles when they went there to put out the blaze.
At one stage, the police drove away the workers, and the fire fighters doused the flame for a two-hours' frantic efforts, the official
added.
Daily Ajkaler Khabar staff reporter Moniruzzaman was also assaulted by the workers. They snatched away his camera, OC Dipu said.
