Justice for Romel Chakma demanded |
Progressive Students Alliance, a platform of left leaning students, on Sunday brought out a demonstration on the Dhaka University (DU) campus demanding justice over the death of an ethnic student leader and HSC examinee Romel Chakma after torture.
Pahari Chhatra Parishad Naniyarchar unit general secretary Romel Chakma was allegedly picked up by military personnel from Naniyarchar Bazar, Rangamati, on April 5, and later handed over to the police. He died under police custody at Chittagong Medical College Hospital on Wednesday. Military personnel allegedly took away Romel's body on Thursday night and burnt it in their custody without following religious rites and tradition on Friday. Leaders and activists of the alliance brought out a procession from Madhur Canteen of the university and paraded different streets of the campus which followed a rally at the base of Aparejeya Bangla.The demonstrators demanded proper investigation and punishment of the people who were responsible for Romel's death. They accused that the army and other law enforcement agencies harassing or arresting innocent people in the CHT in the name of joint drives against criminal activities, and patronising radical Bangali organisations. They also demanded to withdrawn all army camps from Chittagong Hill Tracts area without any delay to ensure peace in the area. |
