PM opens dot bangla domain today
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will formally inaugurate the much-sought dot bangla (.bangla) domain today (Saturday) noon at a simple ceremony at her official residence Ganabhaban.
State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Tarana Halim and other high officials of the Posts and Telecommunications Division and state-owned Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) are expected to be present on the occasion.
An official at the Posts and Telecommunications Division said BTCL, the designated organisation to handle the domain, has already completed necessary preparations to start distribution of the dot bangla domain among the users after it was officially allotted to Bangladesh on October 4 following a long process.
The official said the BTCL will invite applications for the domain while customers can complete all the procedures for the domain online and pay the registration fees through state-owned mobile phone operator Teletalk. Later, the domain will be distributed among the people.
The International Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICAAN) officially allotted the dot bangla (.bangla) internet domain to Bangladesh.
The ICANN sent a letter to the Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Ministry on October 4 informing the decision.
Indian state, West Bengal, and Sierra Leone, one of whose official languages is Bangla, had also applied for the internationalised domain name (IDN) label - dot bangla.
Earlier, ICANN approved another domain label for Bangladesh as dot bd (.bd). From now on, .bangla is Bangladesh's own Unicode domain label.
It is the 2nd country code top-level domain (TLD) for Bangla websites. According to the BTCL, total registered users of .bd have reached 36,500.
Therefore, users can go to the BTCL website (www.btcl.com.bd) by typing btcl.bangla in Bangla fonts in the browser. —UNB
