At present more than 119 million people in the country are using smartphones as per BTRC published data as of September, 2016. Among this huge number of people around 24-26 per cent users uses smart phones.
The rest are still using feature phones. The feature phone users are using their devices less than 2G networks mainly due to their limited usage of data services. Most of the cases, it is seen that while using voice call, the data does not work simultaneously.
To cater the customers' need of using uninterrupted data and voice at the same time, country's telecom operators are working hard by implementing latest technology. Recently, Banglalink, one of the leading digital communications service providers, has come up with the Dual Transfer Mode technology to provide the latest technical service to the customers.
The Dual transfer Mode (DTM) is a unique solution. DTM enables users who use 2G networks to enjoy simultaneous voice and data services on their devices. Conventional 2G network cannot provide both data and voice service at the same time. Voice transmission over a network has to be seamless; any interruption will terminate the transmission.

On the other hand data can be sent in packets and it does not have to be seamless as voice transmission. In 2G networks, as voice transmission is prioritized over data, whenever a user is using data service and a voice call is made the data is suspended and subsequently lost. This shortcoming of 2G has a negative impact on both the user and the service provider. For the user, the suspension or expiration of data service makes them disengaged and they often stop browsing as before.
This hampers their internet usage habits. For telcos this is a problem because not being able to provide data and voice at the same time irritates the customer experience on the carrier's network and this often discourages users from using data altogether.
DTM solves problems of both the affected parties. DTM, as its name suggests, can provide voice and data at the same time. This not only helps users greatly to enjoy a smooth voice and data service, but also increases their amount of usage. "Banglalinkis heavily emphasizing on their DTM overhaul as it is a part of their digital strategy, a key official of Banglalink stated."He also added Banglalink is working in bringing some more latest technology in the coming days to ensure high speed internet user experience and uninterrupted network service.
DTM ensures continued data usage while in the voice calls. In developing or under developed countries, DTM brings about a great deal of change in the usage pattern of customers. DTM helps build and nourish customers' voice and data usage. To avail DTM services, users'need to have DTM handset compatibility.
