KHULNA, Dec 9: Nation will recall the saga of Bir Shreshtha  Ruhul Amin, one of the seven greatest heroes of the Liberation War, on his 45th death anniversary today (December 10).
On this day in 1971, just six days before the nation's victory, Engine Room Artificer of Bangladesh Naval Ship (BNS) Palash Ruhul Amin embraced martyrdom on the bank of the Rupsha River.
Earlier, BNS Palash captured Mongla Port from the Pakistani occupation forces in a fierce gun battle. Naval Ship Palash started for their last destination towards Khulna with a view to conquer the industrial city from the Pak Bahini.
As the Ship reached near the Shipyard area, a fighter plane hurled bombed targeting BNS Palash. Mohibullah, Bir Bikram, a staff of the ship, was killed on the spot and the rest naval staff jumped into the River Rupsha.
Everybody managed to escape from the Razakar Bahini except Ruhul Amin.
Ruhul Amin also managed to escape bombing, but he was killed by the Razakar Bahini staying on East Rupsha area near the bank of the River Rupsha.
On the next day, Ruhul Amin along with Mohibullah was buried at Bagmara village under East Rupsha area in the district.
Khulna Development Authority (KDA) has built a memorial complex surrounding their graveyard in 1997. Bangladesh Navy now supervises the complex after being handed over by the KDA since its completion.
Bangladesh Navy in Khulna Headquarter has chalked out different programmes to observe the 45th death anniversary of the two great heroes in befitting manner.
The programmes include placing wreaths at their graves, discussion, doa mahfil and recitation from the Holy Quran.
Rupsha Press Club also will observe the death anniversary of the two great heroes of the Liberation War.
