Suspected criminal killed in Joypurhat 'gunfight'

A suspected criminal was killed in a reported gunfight with the members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Dadra Jontigram area in Sadar upazila of Joypurhat early Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Safinul Islam alias Safin, 29, son of Nazrul Islam.

RAB-5 commanding officer Major Hasan Arafat said, on secret information that Safin along with his associates was staying in the area, a team of elite force conducted a drive there around 3am.
Sensing presence of the team, the criminals opened fire at them, prompting the elite force to retaliate that triggeried a gunfight.

Safin was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while his associates managed to flee the scene.

Later, the RAb members recovered the body and sent it to Joypurhat Sadar Hospital morgue.

They also recovered one foreign pistol and three bullets from the spot.

Safin was accused in 10 cases.
