Uttara girder accident: Writ seeks Tk 1cr for each deceased's family

A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking its directive to the authorities concerned to pay compensation of Tk 1 crore to each deceased's family who were killed on August 15 after a huge girder fell on their car in city's Uttara.
Supreme Court lawyer ABM Shahjahan Akond Masum filed the petition on Wednesday on behalf of lawyer Jakaria Khan.
The writ also sought HC directives to submit a report from BRT on safety measures in the last five years.
The secretaries of the home ministry, roads and highways ministry, local government and other concerned have been made respondents in the writ.
The bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Ahmed Sohel is expected to hold a hearing on the petition later on the day.
On Tuesday, SC lawyer Adv Sagufta Ahmed moved the writ requesting HC directives to ensure proper investigation and action against those responsible for the tragic incident.
Five members of a family were killed as a 50-60 tonnes girder of BRT-3 Elevated Expressway fell on their car, smashing it to the ground, at Uttara's Jasimuddin Road in the capital on Monday (August 15).
Two passengers – a newly married couple Hridoy, 26 and Riya Moni, 21 – were rescued, but the rest of the passengers – Jharna, 28, her two children Zakaria, 2, and Jannat, 6, and Hridoy's father Rubel, 50, and his mother-in-law Fahima, 45, died on the spot.
