Ex-Coast Guard DG lands in jail on graft charge

A Dhaka court on Thursday sent former director general (DG) of Bangladesh Coast Guard Shafiq-ur-Rahman, also a BNP leader, to jail after rejecting his bail prayer in a graft case.
Metropolitan Magistrate Emdadul Haque passed the order.
A team of the Anti-Corruption Commi-ssion (ACC) arrested Shafiq-ur-Rahman from his residence at Mohakhali DOHS on charge of embezzling Tk 7.37 crore.
ACC source said former DG Shafiq-ur-Rahman, during his tenure in 1988, sold 11,100 tonnes of wheat worth Tk 7.37 crore allotted by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief for infrastructure development in the coastal areas
Later, ACC filed an embezzlement case against five people, including the former DG.
