Attacks in Pirganj: 37 sent to jail after remand

Thirty-seven accused were sent to jail on Sunday (October 24) after their three-day remand was over in a case at Pirganj upazila in Rangpur district.
The case was filed for vandalising, looting and carrying out arson attacks on Hindu community's houses at three villages in Ramnathpur union under Pirganj upazila in Rangpur district over alleged blasphemy.
Judge Delwar Hossain of Rangpur senior judicial magistrate court-2 ordered sending the accused to jail on Sunday afternoon. There were four children among the arrested persons. As they were referred to the Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal, the judge directed to send three of them to Jashore Juvenile Correctional Facility.
Pirganj police station's officer-in-charge (OC) Soresh Chandra said 64 persons have so far been arrested in connection with the incident of violence. Of them, 37 were placed on remand for questioning. Arrested Saikat and Rabiul were sent to court.
It may be recalled that a group of people vandalised, looted and set ablaze 28 houses of Hindu community at villages Bara Karimpur, Kasba and Uttarpara under Pirganj upazila at night on October 17 last over an allegedly blasphemous Facebook post by Paritosh Sarker, a youth of Majhipara in Ramnathpur.
