Former State Minister Jahanara Begum dies



Former State Minister for Cultural Affairs Prof Jahanara Begum is no more.

She suddenly fell sick at her residence in Dhaka at about 7:30am on Saturday. Then she was rushed to a private hospital where she breathed her last.

Jahanara Begum joined student politics at Eden Girls' College at the age of 17. She served as the Cultural Affairs secretary of Chhatra Union (Matia Group). She served as the State Minister for Cultural Affairs twice, and as the Primary and Mass Education adviser in the then Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia's cabinet.

She was elected as a member of parliament from Rajbari-1 constituency in the sixth Jatiya Sangsad election held on February 15, 1996 as a BNP candiate.





Jahanara Begum left behind two sons, a daughter, and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn her death. She will be buried at her family graveyard at Shahjahanpur after the arrival of her eldest son Tipu from the United States.
