Hefazat leader Shahinur Pasha held in Sylhet

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police has detained Hefazat-e-Islam leader Advocate Maulana Shahinur Pasha Chowdhury in Sylhet city early Friday.

A CID team from Dhaka arrested him from Bankalapara area of the city around 12:45 am, an official of Sylhet Metropolitan Police confirmed the matter.

Shahinur, also former lawmaker from Sunamganj 3 constituency (Jagannathpur and South Sunamganj),  was the legal affairs secretary of now defunct Hefazat's central committee.

According to police sources, there are several cases against Shahinur Pasha, including of Hefazat violence in 2013.

He was arrested in connection with the recent violences by Hefazat in different parts of the country. Though, it is unknown in which case he was arrested.

Confirming the arrest of Shahinur Pasha, Advocate Abdul Mukit Opi, secretary of Bankalapara Abbasi Jame Mosque Committee, said a CID team from Dhaka, with the help of Sylhet Metropolitan's Airport Police, detained him."
