Chittagong district administration and police have formed two separate probe bodies to investigate the clash at a coal-based power plant at Banshkhali in the district that left five workers dead.
The clash happened when the angry workers started demonstrating over their due salaries and allowances at the plant at Baraghona in Gondamara union under the upazila in the morning.
S.A. Alam Group, one of the biggest industrial conglomerates of the country, is building the power plant at Gondamara area.
After a meeting of the Chittagong district administration at the spot in the afternoon, a four-member probe body was formed and asked the body to submit report within seven days. Besides, the district administration announced to provide Tk 3 lakh each to the family of the deceased and Tk 50,000 to the injured.
Meanwhile, Chittagong Range DIG Anwar Hossain said police has also formed a three-member probe committee and directed to submit the report within seven days.
Inspector (Investigation) Azizul Islam of Banshkhali Police Station, said there was a strong disagreement between the management of the power plant and workers over the due salaries and allowances. Workers started demonstrating from the morning. When police intercepted, the workers allegedly launched an attack on police throwing brick-bats. Four policemen were injured in the attack. Just at that time, a violent clash broke out and four persons were killed in police firing.
The deceased were identified as Ahmed Reza, Rony Hossain, Shuvho and Md Rahat.
According to sources since the first week of the month, there has been a lot of anger among the workers due to not reducing working hours by one hour during the month of Ramadan, giving no break time for prayers and non-fulfillment of demands for wages at the right time. The outrage was made public on Friday. Protests and clashes erupted today when the controlling Chinese authorities did not comply with their demands.
