The present government which came to power through a 'voterless election' has developed a habit to kill people in firing, said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday.
He made the remarks condemning the killing of five workers by firing at a power plant at Banshkhali in Chattogram who were demonstrating for their due salaries and allowances on Saturday morning.
Five workers were killed in police firing and 23 others were injured during a demonstration on Saturday. Doctors said the condition of several of the bullet-ridden injured workers was critical.
In a statement, the BNP Secreary General said police took five lives by firing on the agitating workers when they were demonstrating demanding their outstanding salaries and allowances. "The government will have to shoulder the responsibilities of the killings," he said.
Fakhrul said undesirable sitaution have been arising repeatedly due to misuse of the law enforcement agencies on any issue. It has become a habit of the present Awami League government to kill people by bullets.
The BNP leader said the government's such activities have exposed its fascist character. "Such an autocratic rule now prevailing in the country where people have no right at all, and they would not be allowed to hold demonstration or lodge protest to realise their demands," he said.
He also demanded stern action against those who were involved in opening fire on workers at Banshkhali in Chattogram on Saturday morning and provide proper compensation to the families of the victims.
