The Supreme Court (SC) in the wake of sharp surge of COVID-19 infection and fatality on Monday imposed a ban on producing under-trial prisoners before any subordinate courts or tribunals for holding bail hearings or any other proceedings .
The apex court today issued a notification in this regard.
Signed by High Court Division Registrar Md Golam Rabbani, the notification said during the on-going situation caused by Coronavirus, it is risky to produce prisoners from jail to courts for holding bail hearings or any other proceedings.
“… (Courts) have to hold hearing on bail or for any other case proceedings by not producing the jail inmates before the courtroom by prison van or any other means.
The Supreme Court also gave magistrates the option to hear pleas of remand for the under-trial prisoners virtually with the help of concerned prison authorities.
“The order will immediately be effective and will remain in force until further notice,” the notification said.
